Optional for most trips, required for some visas. Compare medical limits and cancellation cover.
Travel insurance is optional for most trips from the UAE, though some visas, such as Schengen, require medical travel cover. A good policy pays for emergency medical care abroad, trip cancellation and lost baggage. Compare the medical limit, the cancellation cover and the excess, and check whether COVID and sports are included.

Travel insurance is optional for most trips, but some visas require it. A Schengen visa, for example, requires medical travel cover that meets a minimum medical limit. Even where it is not required, medical cover abroad and trip cancellation protect you against large unexpected costs.
A Schengen-compliant policy must provide emergency medical cover up to the required minimum and cover the whole Schengen area for your trip dates. Check that the policy states it is Schengen-compliant and that the medical limit meets the current requirement before you apply for the visa.
Some policies cover COVID-related medical costs and trip disruption, and some exclude them. It is not safe to assume cover. Read the policy wording for COVID medical treatment, quarantine and cancellation before you buy.
Single-trip cover suits one holiday. If you travel several times a year, an annual multi-trip policy is usually better value than buying separate policies each time. Compare the per-trip day limit on annual policies, since long trips can exceed it.
Schengen visa, a ski trip or a year of work travel each need different cover. Compare first.
