Home insurance in the UAE

Optional cover for your building and your belongings. Compare what is included against what is excluded.

Home insurance is optional in the UAE, but landlords and mortgage lenders often ask for it. Contents cover protects your belongings; building cover protects the structure. The detail that matters is the exclusions: water damage, valuables sub-limits and maintenance clauses decide whether a claim is paid, so compare those, not just the premium.

Contents sum insured

Enough to replace everything you own, not a round number that falls short.

Building cover

Required by most mortgage lenders for owners. Tenants rarely need it.

Burst pipes are often covered; slow leaks and poor maintenance often are not.

Valuables & liability

Single-item limits for jewellery, plus personal liability cover.

Home insurance in the UAE: common questions

Is home insurance mandatory in the UAE?

Home insurance is not required by UAE law. It is optional, but landlords often ask tenants for contents or liability cover, and mortgage lenders usually require building insurance as a condition of the loan.

What is the difference between building and contents insurance?

Building insurance covers the structure: walls, roof, fixtures and permanent fittings. Contents insurance covers your belongings inside: furniture, electronics and valuables. Tenants usually need contents only; owners often need both.

Does home insurance cover water damage and AC leaks?

Many policies cover sudden escape of water, such as a burst pipe, but slow leaks, poor maintenance and some AC-related damage can be excluded. Check the water-damage section and the maintenance exclusions before you rely on it.

Do I need home insurance as a tenant in the UAE?

It is not required by law, but contents cover protects your belongings against fire, theft and water damage, and personal liability cover protects you if you damage the property or a visitor is hurt. Some landlords ask for it in the tenancy contract.
