What does the Schengen rule actually require?
The insurance requirement for a Schengen visa comes from the EU Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009), Article 15. The minimum standard, as verified against the European Commission's visa application requirements (current as at the date above), is:
- Medical cover: at least EUR 30,000 for emergency medical treatment.
- Repatriation: cover for repatriation in the event of death or medical emergency, within the same EUR 30,000 minimum (or separately, depending on how the plan structures it).
- Territory: the policy must cover all Schengen member states, not just the entry or main destination country.
- Validity: the policy must cover the full intended stay. Some consulates require the policy to start at least one day before the first entry date and end at least one day after the last departure date, or a 15-day buffer; check the specific consulate's instructions.
If you are flying from Dubai to Europe and ask what travel insurance you need for the Schengen visa: you need a policy that explicitly states EUR 30,000 minimum medical cover, includes repatriation, covers all Schengen states, and is valid for your exact travel dates. A standard domestic UAE health policy does not qualify; you need a specific travel insurance product.
Some European consulates operating in the UAE set higher requirements than the EUR 30,000 baseline, or require specific policy wordings. Germany, France and the Schengen countries most frequently visited by UAE residents each have their own consulate instructions: always check the specific consulate page for the country where you will apply before buying a policy.
What must the certificate show?
Consulates review the insurance certificate, not the policy document itself. The certificate must clearly state all of the following. Missing any item is a common rejection reason.
- Insured's full name, matching the passport name exactly. A certificate in a different name, or with a spelling that differs from the passport, will be rejected.
- Policy period, showing the start and end dates of cover. The dates must encompass the full intended stay.
- Territory, stated as “Schengen Area,” “All Schengen states,” or equivalent. “Europe” alone is sometimes accepted but “Worldwide excluding USA” or similar broad wordings are usually accepted if they include the Schengen zone.
- Medical cover amount, showing at least EUR 30,000 (or equivalent in another currency that meets the threshold at the time of application).
- Repatriation coverage, explicitly stated. A certificate that covers emergency medical but does not mention repatriation is frequently rejected.
- Insurer name and contact details, showing a recognisable licensed insurer. Self-printed documents from unknown platforms are refused.
Most UAE travel insurers who sell “Schengen-compliant” plans issue a certificate formatted specifically for visa purposes. Download and check it before submitting: read every field against the list above.
What gets applications rejected?
The most common insurance-related rejection reasons for Schengen applications from the UAE:
- Dates do not match the intended travel. Buying a policy for the wrong period or forgetting that the certificate must start before, not on, the departure date.
- Repatriation not explicitly covered. General travel insurance that covers “medical emergencies” but does not mention repatriation separately fails this requirement.
- Territory limited to one country. A policy that covers “France only” fails if your itinerary crosses into another Schengen state, even briefly.
- Cover amount below EUR 30,000. Some cheap plans advertised for Schengen visas carry limits below EUR 30,000. Read the certificate, not the marketing.
- Name mismatch. A middle name included on the passport but absent from the certificate, or a transliteration variant, can cause rejection. Insist that the insurer uses your full name exactly as it appears on your travel document.
- Non-licensed insurer. Certificates from companies that are not recognised insurers (some online platforms issue their own “certificates”) are rejected. Use a plan from a licensed UAE insurer or from an insurer the consulate accepts.
How do you buy compliant cover from the UAE?
Buying Schengen-compliant travel insurance from the UAE is straightforward once you know what to look for. Follow the steps below.
- Check the specific consulate's requirements first. Visit the official website of the consulate you will apply to (German, French, Italian, etc.) and note any requirements that go beyond the EUR 30,000 baseline.
- Look for plans labelled “Schengen visa” or “Schengen compliant”. UAE-based travel insurers and brokers specifically flag these plans. Confirm the minimum limit, territory and whether repatriation is included before buying.
- Match the dates precisely. Set the policy start to your first entry date (or one day before, if the consulate requires it) and the end to your last departure date (or one day after, if required).
- Download the certificate immediately. Do not rely on a policy summary or booking confirmation. Download the formal insurance certificate and verify all fields: name, dates, territory, cover amount, repatriation.
- Submit the certificate, not the full policy. Consulates want the certificate (typically one page). The full policy document is not required at application stage.
If you travel to Europe multiple times a year and ask when annual multi-trip beats single-trip: the cross-over is typically around 3 trips a year. Annual Schengen plans are available from UAE insurers and are accepted by most consulates, provided the certificate states the full Schengen area as the territory and the year-long validity covers your specific trip. Always confirm with the consulate whether annual multi-trip certificates are accepted for visa applications, as some prefer single-trip certificates tied to exact dates.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum medical cover for a Schengen visa?
EUR 30,000, as set by EU Visa Code Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, Article 15. Some consulates require higher amounts. The cover must include emergency medical treatment and repatriation across all Schengen member states. Always confirm with the specific consulate before buying.
Does the travel insurance certificate need to cover all Schengen countries?
Yes. The policy territory must cover all Schengen member states, not only the country of application or main destination. Policies limited to a single country are rejected if your itinerary includes more than one Schengen state.
Can I use an annual multi-trip policy for a Schengen visa application?
Many consulates accept annual multi-trip Schengen certificates, provided the territory covers all Schengen states and the dates encompass the intended trip. Some consulates prefer single-trip certificates with exact dates. Check the specific consulate's instructions before buying an annual plan for a visa application.
What happens if my Schengen insurance certificate is rejected?
The visa application is put on hold or refused pending valid insurance. You will need to provide a compliant certificate before the application can be assessed. Buy from a licensed insurer, read the certificate carefully before submitting, and contact the consulate if you are unsure whether a specific plan qualifies.
Does a UAE health insurance policy count for a Schengen visa?
No. A UAE domestic health policy covers treatment in the UAE. It does not cover emergency medical treatment in Europe, does not include repatriation, and is not formatted as a travel insurance certificate. You need a separate travel insurance product specifically for the trip.
What is the cheapest Schengen visa travel insurance from the UAE?
Premiums vary by age, trip duration and insurer. Short single-trip Schengen plans from UAE insurers are among the more affordable travel insurance products. The cheapest plan that still meets the EUR 30,000 minimum and passes the certificate check is what you want. Compare plans and read the certificate before buying, not after.
