What does a visit visa require?
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) incorporate an insurance component into most visit visa routes. The coverage included in the standard visa fee is limited to emergency treatment only.
The specific insurance requirement for each visa category does change. Before applying, confirm the current requirement directly at icp.gov.ae or gdrfadubai.gov.ae (both sites: current as of June 2026; verify again at application time). The ICP site is the authoritative source for family-sponsored visit visas; GDRFA Dubai handles Dubai-issued visas.
For family-sponsored visit visas arranged by a UAE resident or citizen, the sponsor is responsible for ensuring the visitor has adequate medical cover for the duration of the visit. The insurance built into the visa fee is a starting point, not a full medical plan. For long stays or older visitors, sponsors routinely purchase a separate visitor health plan on top of the basic component.
What do visitor plans actually cover?
Visitor health plans available from UAE-licensed insurers differ substantially from the basic visa insurance component. A standalone visitor plan typically covers:
- Emergency hospitalisation in the UAE
- Emergency outpatient treatment, including unplanned GP and A&E visits
- Prescription medication following an emergency consultation
Standard exclusions across visitor plans include:
- Pre-existing conditions: treatment directly linked to a known condition is excluded in virtually all visitor plans
- Planned or elective procedures
- Specialist referrals and routine consultations
- Maternity care (unless an emergency)
- Dental treatment (except emergency pain relief or extraction)
Cover ends when the visa expires or the visitor departs, whichever comes first. The insured sum varies by plan; check the policy document for the specific benefit limits before purchasing.
What should sponsors arrange for visiting parents?
Sponsors arranging visit visas for elderly parents are the most common scenario where the basic visa insurance falls short. Four things to consider:
Duration: for visits of 30 days or more, a standalone visitor health plan gives substantially broader cover than the basic visa component. The cost per day is modest at younger ages and rises for older visitors.
Age: most visitor plans are available up to age 65 or 70. Above that, some insurers offer plans with higher contributions or narrower cover. Check the specific insurer’s terms directly before purchasing, as age limits and loadings differ by operator.
Pre-existing conditions: these are almost universally excluded. A parent with diabetes, heart disease, or a chronic respiratory condition will receive emergency treatment in the UAE, but any care specifically linked to that condition will be an out-of-pocket cost. Sponsors should budget for this separately.
Your own health plan: a UAE resident’s health policy covers the named insured and listed dependants who reside in the UAE. It does not extend to family members who are visiting. A UAE resident’s annual travel plan covers the resident while they are travelling abroad; it does not cover guests in the UAE. These are separate needs requiring separate plans.

What about older visitors and pre-existing conditions?
Most visitor health plans in the UAE set an age limit. When a visitor falls outside the standard band, the options narrow. Some specialist insurers offer plans for older visitors at higher contribution rates; others decline cover above a set age. If the visitor is above 65, contact CBUAE-licensed health insurers directly to find available options.
The pre-existing condition exclusion is the most consequential gap in visitor cover. It applies regardless of whether the visitor declares the condition at the time of purchase; if a condition was known before the policy started, treatment related to it is typically not covered. This is not a YMYL scare, it is standard practice across visitor plans globally. The sponsor and visitor should understand this before the trip begins.
For visitors with a chronic condition who are coming for an extended stay, the practical approach is to arrange a UAE-based specialist consultation on a self-pay basis if needed, rather than expecting the visitor plan to cover it. Some private hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer self-pay rates for international visitors; the hospital’s billing department can advise.
Visitor plans are priced per day or per week of cover. For a 30-day stay with a healthy visitor in a standard age band, the plan cost is modest. The real risk of not having a standalone plan emerges in emergency hospitalisation, which in UAE private hospitals without any cover can become a significant out-of-pocket liability in hours.

Frequently asked questions
I’m sponsoring my parents on a visit visa to the UAE. What health insurance do they legally need?
The ICP and GDRFA incorporate a basic insurance component into most visit visa routes that covers emergency treatment. As sponsor, you are responsible for ensuring this is in place. For stays of 30 days or more, or for parents aged 60 and above, a standalone visitor health plan from a UAE-licensed insurer gives substantially broader protection. Verify the current visa-specific requirement at icp.gov.ae before applying.
Does UAE visit visa insurance cover hospitalisation?
The basic component in the visa covers emergency hospitalisation only. It does not cover planned admissions, specialist referrals or treatment for pre-existing conditions. A standalone visitor health plan covers emergency hospitalisation within its benefit limits; check the plan document for the specific sum insured before purchasing.
Does my UAE health plan cover family visiting from abroad?
No. A UAE resident’s health plan covers the named insured and listed dependants who reside in the UAE. Visiting family members are not covered. You need to arrange a separate visitor health plan for them for the duration of their stay. Your annual travel plan, if you have one, covers you while travelling abroad, not guests in the UAE.
Health insurance for visitors in UAE, parents coming for 3 months, what do they need?
For a 3-month visit, a standalone visitor health plan is the right tool. The plan covers emergency hospitalisation and outpatient care for acute conditions during the stay. Pre-existing conditions are excluded; budget separately for any care linked to known conditions. Check the insurer’s age limit and any loading for visitors above 60. Purchase the plan before the visit begins.
Can my parents use travel insurance from their home country as UAE visitor health cover?
It depends on the policy. Some travel insurance plans from other countries cover medical treatment in the UAE; others exclude the UAE if it is listed as the insured’s country of residence or if the insured is travelling to visit a resident family member. Check the territorial scope and exclusions in the home-country policy carefully. If it does not cover UAE medical treatment, a UAE-issued visitor plan fills the gap.
What happens if an older visitor (above 70) needs health insurance for a UAE visit?
Standard visitor health plans may have an upper age limit of 65 or 70. Above that, options narrow: some specialist insurers offer plans with higher contributions; others decline cover. Contact CBUAE-licensed health insurers directly to find available options for visitors above 70. The CBUAE publishes its licensed insurer list at cbuae.gov.ae.
