What are the consequences of lapsed cover?
When a UAE motor policy expires, cover stops at midnight on the last day. The next morning, the vehicle is legally uninsured. No buffer exists in the regulations, and insurers do not extend cover informally beyond the expiry date.
Driving an uninsured vehicle is a traffic offence. Under Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 on Traffic Regulation, effective 29 March 2025 (verified June 2026), the fine is AED 500 to AED 1,000 plus black points on the licence.
The registration angle matters just as much. Vehicle registration renewal (the Mulkiya) in Dubai requires a valid insurance certificate before the renewal can be processed. If your policy has lapsed and your Mulkiya is also due, both problems compound: you cannot renew the registration without first renewing the insurance.
At-fault accidents while uninsured carry a further risk. The unified motor policy (IA Board Decision No. 25/2016, CBUAE, verified June 2026) requires third-party liability cover, which covers damage and injury you cause to others up to AED 2,000,000 per accident for third-party property. Without it, you carry that liability personally.
For a full explanation of what third-party liability covers, see third party car insurance in the UAE explained.
Is there a grace period?
No. There is no statutory grace period for car insurance in the UAE. The policy expires on the date shown on the certificate, and no cover exists from the moment it lapses.
Some drivers assume a few days’ overlap is built into the system, or that the insurer will honour a claim made shortly after expiry. Neither is correct. The insurer has no obligation to cover events after the policy end date.
The only scenario where the end date might look different from what you expect is when a policy renews automatically under a direct debit arrangement. If the renewal has already processed and payment has cleared, the new policy period has started. Check your insurer’s renewal process to confirm whether auto-renewal is in place and whether payment has cleared on time.
How do you get cover immediately?
The fastest route is an online purchase with an insurer that issues electronic policy documents. UAE insurers licensed by CBUAE issue policy certificates electronically; the document typically arrives by email within minutes of payment clearing. This covers you immediately and lets you drive legally again as soon as the certificate is in your hands.
Documents you will need: Emirates ID, driving licence, vehicle registration (Mulkiya) and an NCD letter from your previous insurer. For a detailed walkthrough of the online process, see buying car insurance online in the UAE: the process, the documents, the catches.
If your Mulkiya is also due for renewal, the sequence matters: renew the insurance first, then use the new certificate to process the Mulkiya renewal through the relevant authority (RTA in Dubai).
Do not drive to an insurer’s office without cover in place. The uninsured drive, however short, is still an offence.
Will the gap affect your NCD?
A no-claims discount (NCD) earned up to the expiry date does not immediately disappear. Insurers typically accept an NCD letter from the previous insurer and honour the discount on the new policy, provided the gap between policies is not too long.
The specific threshold varies by insurer. Some accept a gap of up to 30 days without penalty; others have different rules. When you apply after a lapse, the insurer will ask about the gap and may request your expiry certificate from the previous insurer. Being accurate is essential; inaccurate information on an insurance application is grounds for claim rejection.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fine for driving with expired car insurance in the UAE?
Under Federal Decree-Law No. (14) of 2024 on Traffic Regulation (effective 29 March 2025), the fine for driving without valid insurance is AED 500 to AED 1,000 plus black points on the licence. The fine applies from the day after the policy expires.
Is there a grace period for car insurance renewal in the UAE?
No. UAE motor insurance law has no statutory grace period. Cover stops at midnight on the expiry date. Any claim arising after that date is not covered, and driving the vehicle is an offence. Renew before the policy expires, not after.
If I have an accident while uninsured, who pays?
You pay personally. Without valid third-party liability cover, you are personally liable for any damage or injury you cause to other parties. The other driver’s insurer may pursue you directly, or the injured party may seek damages through the courts. There is no UAE equivalent of a motor insurers’ bureau to cover uninsured drivers’ liabilities.
How quickly can I get new car insurance after it expires?
Very quickly. UAE-licensed insurers issue electronic policy certificates online within minutes of payment clearing. You will need your Emirates ID, driving licence, Mulkiya and your previous insurer’s NCD letter. Buy online, receive the certificate by email, and you are covered for the new policy period immediately.
Does a gap in insurance affect my no-claims discount?
A short gap usually does not. Most UAE insurers accept an NCD letter from your previous insurer and apply the earned discount to the new policy, provided the gap is within their accepted threshold (commonly up to 30 days, though this varies by insurer). A very long gap may cause some insurers to treat you as a new policyholder with no NCD. Always carry your NCD letter when switching.
Can I drive my car to the insurer’s office if it’s uninsured?
No. Driving without valid insurance is an offence regardless of the reason for the journey. Buy cover online before moving the vehicle. Electronic policies issue within minutes and the certificate is valid immediately on receipt.
